Kristen J. Navara
Graduate Student "Contract"
What I can do for you
During your time here at UGA and beyond, I will do my best to:
1.) Provide funding for both research and stipend (not guaranteed)
2.) Provide advice and contacts towards the advancement of your career
3.) Help with the development and execution of a research project
4.) Critique grant proposals and manuscripts
5.) Schedule meetings (at least weekly) to discuss your progress
6.) Hold weekly roundtables to discuss current literature and critique manuscripts
7.) Show you the scientific “ropes”
What will be expected of you
I will do my best to help you to become a successful scientist on a national level, but to reach that goal, I will expect YOU to:
1.) Be in the lab and/or accessible for discussions/interactions with myself and other lab members
2.) Think and research independently, come up with your own questions, bring me new literature you’ve discovered
3.) Give talks and posters at national meetings
4.) Write publications
5.) Write grant proposals, attempt to fund part of your research
6.) Help out fellow lab mates and learn from them in return
7.) Take proper care of research animals (!!!)
8.) Make sure all necessary forms are submitted (both for academic progress and research)
9.) Maintain academic and professional honesty
10.) Be honest with yourself – getting a degree in the sciences requires much work, motivation, and an avid interest in what you are doing. It is not a 9-5 job and is impossible to simply “get by”.
